Father Time Just Sprinted Through The First Half Of ‘09

06/30/2009 David Jones

For some reason, the second hand on my watch is spinning out of control.  It’s both crazy and amazing just how quickly this year is moving…racing that is.  Even though we’ve only completed six months of the year so far, it is a memorable one.  I mean several historical events happened this year that have made a significant impression on this generation (or at least on me).  We witnessed:

  • The inauguration of the nation’s first African American president.
  • The State of California running out of money…financial “armageddon” according to Gov. Schwarzenegger.
  • A trillion dollar stimulus package…yes, that’s a numeral one followed by twelve zeros…I get dizzy thinking about it.
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers winning their 6th Super Bowl title.
  • The end of the Tony Dungy era in Indianapolis.
  • Kobe Bryant winning his fourth NBA title…without Shaquille O’Neal.
  • Phil Jackson surpassing Celtic coaching legend Red Auerbach by winning his 10th NBA title as a coach…without beating the Celtics.
  • Shaquille O’Neal having his best season as a member of the Phoenix Suns…without making the NBA Playoffs.
  • The divorce of Terrell Owens and the Dallas Cowboys.
  • General Motors and Chrysler getting our tax money (a.k.a. stimulus ) and still filing for bankruptcy.
  • The rise…fall…rise of gas prices.
  • The Obama cabinet nominees who had to step aside or apologize for not paying taxes…shameful.
  • Israel duking it out with the Palestinians.
  • President Obama appearing on the Jay Leno show.
  • Las Vegas being voted the “Emptiest City in America”.
  • Protests in London at the G20 Summit.
  • Swine Flu…Swine Flu…more Swine Flu.
  • Kobe Bryant and LeBron James Nike puppet commercials…and those goofyVitaminWater Great debates.
  • The movie “Slum Dog Millionaire” being nominated for 10 academy awards and winning 8 including “Best Picture”.
  • The rebirth of Star Trek…without Bill Shatner.
  • Ashston Kutcher beating CNN in the one million Twitter challenge…that was this year right?
  • Bernie Madoff stealing the life fortunes of many…sentenced to 150 years in prison.
  • Former Vice President Dick Cheney doing more talking than he did when he spent 8 years in office.
  • Protests in Iran and the death of Neda…RIP.
  • The deaths of notable people including Chuck Daly, Danny Gans, Jack Kemp, Billy Mays, Dom Delouise, David Carradine, Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, and Michael Jackson…RIP.

One of the most amazing things for me was when I had to shovel snow…in Las Vegas, NV and I don’t own a shovel (a story for another time…hehehe).  And these notable events mentioned have barely scratched the surface.  With six months remaining, only time will tell just what is in store for us.  Hopefully, 2009 will start to pace itself so that I can actually get some things done on  my “to do list”.
