Can Peace And Brotherhood Ever Become Reality?

09/29/2009 David Jones Comments off

The cycle of hate and violence continues (Hate-Begetting-Hate-Must-Be-Broken).

READ Derrion Albert’s Story:  http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/28/chicago.teen.beating/index.html

My heart broke when I saw the video that was repeatedly shown on CNN.  This is not the first time something violent was done to a child in Chicago and I grieve every time I think about.

This brutal violence makes me wonder if there is any hope for us and for our children.  Hate has no color, no friends, no loyalty only purpose…the purpose of destruction and annihilation.

And where there is hate, racism lurks…

On Twitter, a Caucasian woman made derogatory and disrespectful comments towards African Americans regarding Derrion Albert’s death, comments like:

  • I hate to say it but the more I watch these videos, the more deserving I see #DerrionAlbert was.
  • Really people get over #DerrionAlbert he’s clearly not important. #HeidiMontag ’s single Body Language is amazing. Let’s talk about that.
  • Isn’t it funny the dark kind only come out in herds when something happens to one of them then they bring up race? Pathetic!

I won’t give the woman any credibility or increase her popularity by saying her name (mentioning her name wound up having people follow her – her followers increased 52% in less than an hour).  Her comments continue to show that we as Americans still have a long way to go with regards to equality.

I reflect on these words:

I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word. – Martin Luther King Jr.

America needs a change of heart if it ever wants to save its future. but today, my thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Derrion Albert.
